Recently, and once again...I decided
it was time to do some purging and reorganizing in my studio and storage! A fun part was reviewing old Threads magazines & related pre-Internet catalogs, pulling out a few special how-to articles or inspiration favorites and placing them in a
3-ring. (Yes, I know, most everything
they cover can be pulled from an online image, U-tube or well-written article, but
it’s great to be able to flip through some actual paper without wearing out my
printer.)

sequins, sparkles, tulle, brocades, textured and embellished feminine
styles.

You might also see some new items in menswear silhouettes
incorporating some of the above and with a character kick. My current goal is to use some of the
wonderful stash of fabrics and trim I’ve been holding onto for customers unafraid
to jazz up their image once in a while.

children, teens and adults.

Always something in the works when you love to create clothing items. Here are a few items produced in 2016 not featured in prior posts: linen vest and trousers for 6' 9" groom, and a vintage wedding gown restored and recreated boned bodice covered in gorgeous heavily beaded lace.

I hope you will take a few minutes to explore all of my pages. You can scroll down here to see some photos of pieces from my collections and click on the page tabs at the top for more.

In fact, I've just uploaded some of the wonderful photos of the costumes I designed for the April 2015 production of Sunday in the Park with George directed by Jerome Davis at Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. Doing these period pieces are my favorite types of costuming. This musical required building not just the main outerwear, but corsets and bustles, top hats, French bonnets, and parasols. For me, keeping things within a tight budget allows me to recycle fabrics and trim from thrift shop finds, recreate, reshape, and generally transform the old into the new garment. We took apart and tweaked children's umbrellas and lace dresses for the parasols, restyled 2-piece suits into a cutaway and a tail coat, etc. Of course, some pieces are created from yardage and which may have required painting to achieve the final look.

Lots of photos on their website of all of the fun ensembles by local designers included on the runway. My designs raised $350 for the non-profit's work and are shown below on my gorgeous model, Jessica Grace Booker, The jacket is a lightweight casual denim fabric detailed in patent. Pockets are pieced over pink/lavender silk dupioni using lace and cut velvet representing the treasured life skills participants in Step Up Ministry receive. This piece work design is also used on the princess line dress. The semi-formal dress is a pink/lavender silk dupioni with hand-dyed silk chiffon sleeves which can be worn on or off the shoulder. Trim detail appears both on the front and the low back of the dress (not shown). The long vest has side pockets, slightly capped sleeves, a high collar and is also edged in patent. The style, represents the confidence participants leave the program with as they enter back into the community, employed and giving back.
Check out www.ActivateGood.org for full details on Couture for a Cause.

I have gone through the application and jury process, and was accepted to design for this annual fundraising event. Local designers create garments in two categories which will be modeled on the runway and auctioned off with proceeds to benefit the work of Activate Good. Each designer will present a garment of courture/art to wear and ready to wear as inspired by a selected non-profit that is supported in part by Activate Good. You can see why this opportunity is an honor and very exciting to every part of me.

I am paired with Step Up Ministry which trains, assists and encourages individuals who are coming out of the prison system to obtain solid employment and pursue their dreams. Well, you will find out more clearly what they do by, yes, GOING TO THEIR WEBSITE!

Speaking of websites, I am in the research and development stage of getting one up and running. Lots of things to do as November 9th is this event and November 16th is the Fall Fashion Show and Expo.

All I can tell you about my designs is that they will reflect my commitment to incorporating cast-off items which will be seeing new life and that they will be a tad dramatic but very wearable. Pictures and postings on the ongoing design process will come later. This week I hope to finalize my designs, meet & measure my model, and roll up my sleeves!

They assist designers in getting their products seen and sold. Suggestions for me were to return to using the name and brand Raiment for the Fancy in You rather than Sewing for the Ages. This I am looking into. While I still use Raiment for much of my line, Sewing for the Ages was created to encompass designs for any age, for theatre, costume events, or just fanciful attire. It also included the offering of custom classes. Class offerings were not seized upon and may or may not happen in the future. Currently, my time is devoted to creating inventory and getting it through the sale process in various venues. I am definitely learning more and more about marketing in this on line world. Your thoughts?
PLEASE STAY TUNED AS THINGS CHANGE AND GROW.

Meantime, the shiny red HERO cape is being well received. Where is your HERO? Selling these for $25 and remember, they hold a secret pocket for your personal Thank You Note and later for the Hero's secret.
Maybe your Hero is a child now in the midst of a serious challenge or that stranger that helped you with a flat tire. Your Hero might be a friend being celebrated for years of faithfulness, perhaps a neighbor that mowed your lawn when you were unable. Your Hero can come in any gender or age, amazing us with their sacrifice and courage in going that extra mile for us or for others. The first recipient of my HERO CAPE design is a 3-yr.old boy just diagnosed with leukemia and bone cancer facing 2-3 years of chemo and not certain what else. His Aunt wanted to send him some fun and encouragement. I didn't mention that the cape has a pocket on the inside with a suggested type of "YOU ARE MY HERO BECAUSE...." card to be included and in some cases, to be kept as a reminder of that stand up and fly time.

Introducing two new collections from Raiment --for the fancy in You! Special event items for those Diva dates - no two are alike. Created in gorgeous chiffons, silks, and lightweight knits, each is hand stitched and lovingly embellished. In the photos below, I first show a cut velvet with matching (and optional) scarf, luscious in the early fall and late winter. Spring and summer selections are shown on the following collage-style presentations.

These styles were first shown at The Designers Uptown Market at Lafayette Village in Raleigh on May 25th, 2013.

Gilded Pallete Gallery allowed me to "pop up" at the June 2nd Friday Art Event in Wake Forest. At least one Saturday a month through November, I will have these, as well as my children's and accessory lines on display for sale or for custom orders at The Durham Craft Market in the park at Foster Street across from The Durham Farmers's Market. Other locations to be announced.

Amazing. Sew it goes....

I've finally put some of the photos together of a few things I have worked on, at least during the last year. Not sure what happed in 2010 and 2011 (except for the large costume drama in November of 2010 that occupied me from about September forward. Oh, and the wedding in May of 2010 consumed most of the spring, doing Noel's dress and my "Little Number." And, 2011, - well, when it comes back to me, I'll squeeze it in.

This year I have so enjoyed all the different apparel and accessory items made from original designs, some done by upstyling which is probably my favorite thing to do. Some of these started in mid-2011 actually with the woven & beaded bracelets and the leather cuffs, then spilled over into the early Spring with my line of berets and fingerless gloves, as well as a "Spiffy Duds" for baby and toddlers.
This is my way of "kicking up" some classics for men that will give those who want to be a little more edgy or artsy in their classics, an alternative to simply choosing a jazzier tie. I will post some photos soon of "Raiment for Men." [Yeah, I know, despite my husband and son being exhibited photographers, my blog is sorely lacking in the thousand words you would rather see in a few great shots.]

Why "Raiment?" you wonder...A few years ago, I launched what I call "Raiment--for the Fancy in You!" which featured a line of beaded long and skinny scarves, of various luxurious fabrics, and for each season. Each of the over 200 pieces was it's own personality and these did rather well in certain places. In fact, I still have some, but sadly the market is pretty swamped with scarves leaving mine to be offered at sale prices when I am in the mood.Bonnie Raddatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282055229738148969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4053386180643416366.post-8249623174169988552009-06-02T08:30:00.000-07:002009-06-02T08:49:57.787-07:00Patience, Persistence, Prayer ...Sergers can require all of these! Fair warning: Don't expect to be able to sew without being committed to exercise each attribute regularly. PATIENCE with yourself, with your equipment. PERSISTENCE in attaining your goal. PRAYER before, during and after.

Even after these many years of sewing, wonderful training, and great (even if now "almost adult age" machines), I find myself needing these 3 skills as much as I need the remembrance of how to thread the needles! However delightful our electronic machines are when everything is humming along, they are sensitive, often moody, especially sergers. Keep your seam ripper(s) handy because even on a great day, perfection (or near perfection which is a much more reasonable goal) can require start over's or redirection. Have a sip of water, let the steam be released and "press on." Weave prayer throughout those frustrations, step away from the needles, see the goal ahead of you, the source of your strength behind. My mother taught me, "If anything is worth doing, it is worth doing well." Take risks (she didn't teach me that, seems inborn) -- if you have a creative vision, pursue it although you may have to toss a project or shelve it along the way.

Let's explore together what you can do with a little patience, persistence and prayer.
CALL SOON TO SCHEDULE YOUR LESSONS.Bonnie Raddatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282055229738148969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4053386180643416366.post-64149025604203576282009-05-18T06:26:00.000-07:002009-05-18T06:31:32.817-07:00HOW ABOUT CUSTOM SWIMSUIT FOR UNDER $10?Why spend hours trying on swimsuits priced at $30, $60 and up, then need one size for your top and one for your bottom, only to find the switcheroo is not allowed or available? I say, let's make a custom fit, or one-size fits "most all", using recycled fabric from your local thrift shop. For less than $5, you can get enough fabric to make a couple of styles. Recycle old bras as well, or even simply bump up the style and fit of a former favorite swimsuit piece. Then add a matching wrap using a simple kimona, wrap skirt, or caftan cut! I hope you will grab a friend or two and contact me to schedule a class. This would be a perfect project for the quick to learn beginner or intermediate student of stichery and design at SEWING FOR THE AGES.Bonnie Raddatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06282055229738148969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4053386180643416366.post-10946715491708905052009-04-20T20:10:00.001-07:002009-04-30T17:28:05.987-07:00Inspiration from a star

Did you happen to see Natalie Cole's costume when she sang this week on American Idol?
